Amit Shah Asserts: Congress Unlikely to Return to Power Amid Chidambaram's Anti-CAA Stand

New Delhi: Amit Shah, Union Home Minister on Monday issued a strong rebuke to senior Congress leader P Chidambaram who asserted that the INDIA alliance will repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and three new criminal laws if voted to power after the Lok Sabha elections.

The Union Home Minister said that "neither the Congress will ever come to power nor the laws i.e The Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 (CAA), Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Addhiniyam, will ever be revoked."

“Congress leaders are talking about abolishing those laws that empower the common people of the country and protect their rights. Blinded by the politics of appeasement, Congress has lost its nerve upon seeing its crushing defeat in the first phase. It is hell-bent on harming Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, Sikh, and Parsi communities to appease its vote bank,” Amit Shah said.

Speaking regarding CAA, Shah said that the "priority of the BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to provide Indian citizenship and secure the rights of persecuted Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, Sikh, and Parsi communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh."

P Chidambaram, former Union Minister and Congress leader on Sunday said that if the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, it would enact a special law to bring into effect the legal principle established by the Supreme Court that "bail is the rule, and jail is the exception".

He further mentioned that "if the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, it will repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the three criminal laws brought by the BJP government."

Elaborating on his statement, Chidambaram said, "We will repeal, amend and review the following sets of laws - CAA 2019 is at the top of the list. The Farmers Produce, Trade and Commerce Promotion of Facilitation Act 2020, the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita that is equivalent to the IPC, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita that is the CrPC and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Act that is the Evidence Act."

"These five will be totally repealed. Then we have eight laws that will be repealed and new laws will be made. Then we have 25 laws, which will be amended and brought on par with the Constitution. So we are absolutely clear that the Citizenship Amendment Act will be repealed," Chidambaram added.
