ISKCON saint and Bangladeshi Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was denied bail by a Bangladeshi court on Tuesday. The court also upheld the sedition case filed against him earlier this month amid tensions over minority rights in the country. The development came after saint Krishna Das Prabhu, who is known as a prominent leader of the Hindu group Sammilita Sanatani Jote was barred from leaving the country and detained at the Dhaka Airport by the nation’s authorities on Monday and taken to an undisclosed location.
Soon after his arrest, Hindu rights advocacy and civil society groups in Bangladesh started protesting in Dhaka, Chittagong and other major cities demanding his release.
The ISKCON temple authorities have sought the Indian government’s intervention hours after Bangladeshi Hindu religious leader Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was detained at Dhaka Airport. ISKCON authorities requested the Indian government to speak to the Government of Bangladesh to convey that “ISKCON has anything to do with terrorism anywhere in the world".The temple further demanded the Bangladesh government to immediately release its leader and stated that they are a peace-loving Bhakti movement.
Terming the allegations against Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das as baseless, the temple authorities took to its official X handle and wrote, “We have come across disturbing reports that Sri Chinmoy Krishna Das, one of the prominent leaders of ISKCON Bangladesh, has been detained by the Dhaka police. It is outrageous to make baseless allegations that ISKCON has anything to do with terrorism anywhere in the world."
“ISKCON, Inc. urges the Government of India to take immediate steps and speak to the Government of Bangladesh and convey that we are a peace-loving Bhakti movement. We want the Government of Bangladesh to release Chinmoy Krishna Das immediately. Our prayers to Lord Krishna for the protection of these devotees," the post added.
