Almost a month ago, Nayanthara made headlines when she released a strongly-worded three-page open letter addressed to Dhanush. The issue arose after Dhanush refused to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for using clips from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. The film holds a special place in her heart as it marked the beginning of her relationship with director Vignesh Shivan. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nayanthara opens up about her decision to address the matter publicly. When asked how she found the courage to take on someone as influential as Dhanush, she clarified that it wasn’t about creating controversy. She revealed, “It was never meant to be a controversy. The timing of the letter made it seem that way.”
She went on to explain the series of events, saying that after the trailer for her documentary was released, Dhanush sent her a legal notice demanding ₹10 crore to approve the clips. She shared, “I took 2-3 days to evaluate whether to do something like this or not”. Then ultimately, she took a stand for herself.
Nayanthara stood by her decision, saying, “Why should I be scared of doing something which I feel is right? I should be scared only if I’m doing something wrong.” Further she emphasized that tarnishing Dhanush’s image was never her intention, adding, “I am not someone who would tarnish someone’s image just for the sake of publicity.”
Addressing allegations that her move was a publicity stunt, Nayanthara said the controversy only escalated because she spoke out publicly. She explained that she genuinely tried reaching out to Dhanush directly, making multiple calls but got no response from him despite speaking to his manager.
Opening up about her personal disappointment, Nayanthara revealed, “I thought he would be the first person to say okay for the NOC because we’ve been friends for years.” Despite the all that happened, she made sure holding no grudges against Dhanush, acknowledging that he has the right to deny the NOC since he owns the film rights.
